Yemeni Coffee Social

  • PLNTR 1825 18th St, NW Washington DC United States (map)

Join us for an afternoon of tasting specialty Yemeni Coffees from Dragonfly Coffee Roasters while enjoying a musical exploration of Nizar Qabbani's poetry and stories from the homeland with Syrian artist, Aiyah Sibay and Lebanese oud musician, Alaa Abdulbaki.

Nizar Qabbani was a Syrian poet who wrote daringly about the pain of love, the erotic, and freedom for the Arab woman. Qabbani held a deep reverence for women and saw them as the source of love, salvation, and power. He resisted the conservatism of his people, and insisted on the liberation of body and soul from the social laws of his time. Qabbani rejected the secrecy of love.“Love me and say it out loud,” he wrote. “I refuse that you love me mutely.” He passionately believed that the source of the Arab's people's path to freedom and happiness lay in the way they loved, and is remembered for saying, "Love is a prisoner in the Middle East, and I want to free it."

Featuring two single-origin Yemeni coffees – Haraaz Red A+ Medium Light Natural Process and Nano Lot Medium Light Natural Process from Al-Khanshali Estates.

Artwork featuring verses from Qabanni's poetry will be on display and available for purchase. The performance will be in Arabic and English; all non-Arab speakers are welcome!
